We believe that God is beautiful and that as children of his creative power who bear his image we are equipped by God to create works of art. Since bearing his image is unique to men and women among all creation and since bearing God's image means men and women are able to reflect who God is and what he is like through our own creations, we believe that all human beings are artists.

Art can take many forms, shapes, sounds; it can be interpreted in myriad ways, as beautiful by some or grotesque by others. Because God is the source of all art (as the creator), works of art have the ability to point people to God, but, because God has given us freedom in our creativity, art can also point people away from God. In that sense, art is never neutral.

Our popular culture is highly influenced by art and in turn influences artists and their works. Art expresses the questions, doubts, fears, triumphs, joys, brokenness and hope that make up the often unspoken bedrock of pop culture and, indeed, of human experience. As the church of Christ, we want to acknowledge all that art can potentially express and recognize the valuable role of artists, as image bearers of God, in bringing to light the complexity of human existence in God's world.
