What The Journey Has Meant To You
With its emphasis on healthy marriages, The Journey has had profound influence on my family. I am so grateful for a place that first challenges me in the way I love and lead my wife...the leaders of The Journey understand that this has to come first; before a healthy ministry can be built, healthy families have to be built.
Quote Or Advice
"Me fail English? That's unpossible."
-Ralph Wiggum
Favorite Reads Or Films
My favorite fiction writers include Douglas Coupland, and the fiction of C.S. Lewis. Add in a little John Piper for passionate theology and Donald Miller for a Christian stream-of-consciousness mind trip and I'm set.
As far as movies, the climax of Dead Poet's Society has been my favorite big-screen moment since I saw it in the theater in middle school. Ethan Hawke's character (the shy awkward guy) finally jumps on top of his desk and calls out to his favorite teacher (played by Robin Williams) who is getting kicked out of school, "O Captain, my Captain." Classic. It was enough to almost cause my little 12-year old heart to explode.
What You Enjoy
This is kind of a broad category, but my ideal day would include a long date with my wife, hitting one of our favorite restaurants, walking through one of St. Louis' older beautiful neighborhoods and taking in the beauty of one of our parks.
Where You Grew Up And What You Did As A Kid
I grew up down South in Jackson, Mississippi, climbing in ditches, building forts, always getting in trouble for talking in too much in class, and making torches out of cans of hairspray.
Hope For The Journey
My desire is to see The Journey become a Gospel-centered community: that everything we do and teach-from spiritual growth, to worship, to social justice-be rooted deeply in the Gospel of God's grace in Jesus.
Yada, Yada, Yada
My favorite Seinfeld episode is the one where Kramer buys a chicken in order for it lay "cage free, farm fresh" eggs only to find out that it's actually a rooster. Jerry and Kramer are forced to enter "Little Jerry" in a cockfight (in order to persuade the local convenience store owner to take down a check that Jerry bounced), while George dates a woman that he meets at a minimum security prison. As usual, much craziness ensues.
