Meet The Bands - Waving Not Drowning

wnd cd cover

Music plays a big part of the corporate worship times at The Journey. Creating and playing that music are several bands made up of many talented musicians. Over the next couple weeks, Liner Notes is excited to introduce you to the bands that create the music at The Journey. We begin with the band that has been together the longest at The Journey, Waving Not Drowning.

Waving Not Drowning

Musicians often wear their influences on their sleeves. In a band, this can result in each musician combining influences to create something new, something strangely original and familiar at the same time.

Named after a more hopeful twist on a good but gloomy line from poet Stevie Smith, Waving Not Drowning (WND) is The Journey's most straight-ahead rock (and probably loudest) band. Founded by Pastor Joel Lindsey on electric rhythm and vocals, WND reveals his penchant for classic and southern rock. While original drummer and co-founder Rich Budwell has moved on to new things, his blues and rocker influences still shape the band’s sound today. Add to that the "metal" tinged guitar riffs and tasty keyboard tones of Andy Richmond, the rock-solid bottom end of bassist Graham Farra, the pop and indie rock influences of new drummer Nate Quest, and the smooth-as-glass vocals of Erin Moore, and you get an edgy mix along the lines of The Doors-meets-U2-meets-King's X.

Serving primarily at the Tower Grove Campus, WND offers original worship songs and hymn arrangements, along with familiar songs from others from worship leaders and song writers across the country, all with the goal of helping people focus on God and respond to Him in corporate worship.

Stay tuned for news on WND’s first CD release, Responding, coming this Fall to a campus near you!
